Weighted Swing
This drill is at-home friendly!
This drill uses an external weight (commonly a small sledgehammer, 5–10 lbs) to give the body honest feedback about the correct swing path and leverage of a throw. A weighted object makes it very difficult to "cheat" the motion with just wrist or arm strength — the weight forces the body to use its big muscles (legs, hips, core) in the correct sequence, and forces a smooth, gravity-assisted swing rather than a forced, muscled-up one.
How to do it
- Choose a light sledgehammer or similarly shaped weighted object, roughly 5–10 lbs (heavy enough to demand correct sequencing, light enough not to strain the shoulder).
- Take your normal stance and go through the throwing motion in slow motion, swinging the weight through the same path your arm would take with a disc.
- Focus on feeling the weight travel through your hips and core, not just your shoulder and arm — you should feel your legs and trunk doing the work of accelerating the weight, with the arm acting more like a whip at the end of the chain.
- Gradually increase the speed of the swing over several reps as the pattern feels more natural, but never sacrifice the correct sequencing for speed.
Recommended reps
3 sets of 8 slow, controlled swings per side, 1–2x per week. This is a supplemental strength/patterning drill, not a replacement for actual disc throws, so always pair it with a normal field session in the same week.
