Drills
One-Step
This is the bridge between the standstill throw and a full X-step run-up. It introduces a single unit of forward momentum and teaches the player how to "brace" against their front leg — converting horizontal running speed into rotational speed at the moment of the throw. Bracing is one of the biggest sources of untapped distance for intermediate players, because a soft or collapsing front leg leaks power that should be transferring into the disc.
How to do it
- Start with feet together, disc held at the power pocket (center of your chest).
- Take one step forward with your lead foot (left foot for a RHBH thrower) while simultaneously starting your reach-back with the disc.
- As that lead foot plants, actively push the knee outward slightly and stiffen the leg — think of "bracing" like a pole vaulter planting their pole. This is what converts your forward motion into a rotational whip.
- Rotate the hips into and through the throw, let the shoulders and arm follow, and finish with a complete follow-through.
The plant leg should feel like a wall your hips bounce off of, not a leg that keeps traveling forward.
Recommended reps
3 sets of 10 throws, twice a week. Alternate between putters and mid-ranges to keep the emphasis on timing and bracing rather than raw disc speed.
