Pull-Through
4.1 What the Pull-Through Is
The pull-through is everything that happens between your full reach-back (arm fully extended, body coiled) and the moment the disc leaves your hand. This is where your body's rotational energy — built up through your X-step and brace — actually gets transferred into the disc. A clean pull-through takes that stored energy and delivers it along a straight, efficient path; a broken pull-through (usually via rounding, covered in Section 7) leaks that energy out sideways and dramatically reduces both distance and accuracy.
4.2 The Important Parts of the Pull-Through
The takeaway from full extension
Rather than thinking of this as "pulling the disc," think of it as your body rotating around a disc that stays relatively still in space for a moment — your torso and hips begin turning first, and the arm essentially gets "left behind" briefly, which is what creates the separation and stretch that powers the rest of the motion.
The mid-pull acceleration
As your hips continue to open toward the target, your torso follows, then your shoulder, then your elbow starts to close, bringing the disc in toward your chest along a straight path — not looping around the outside of your body.
The power pocket entry
Covered in full in Section 5 — this is the critical checkpoint moment where the disc should be close to your chest, elbow near (but not locked at) a right angle, right before final acceleration.
The final whip/release
Your forearm and wrist "whip" the disc out of the power pocket and away from your body along the target line, with the disc ripping from your fingers rather than being consciously released.
Follow-through
Your body continues to rotate naturally after the disc leaves your hand — a complete, unrestricted follow-through is a sign that you let your full rotational energy through the throw instead of stopping short or holding back.
To add the most distance to your throw you must begin using your non throwing arm as the start of your pull through. Create space from your non throwing arm to your torso and as you get to peak reach back drive the non throwing arm down toward your front knee. This will generate free hip usage and lead to an effortless throw that goes further.
4.3 Lines and Planes of the Pull-Through
Two concepts govern everything about a correct pull-through:
The Line of Play
This is the straight path the disc should travel along from your reach-back position all the way to your release point. Any time the disc deviates from this line — swinging out away from your body, dipping down and then popping back up, or cutting inside toward your chest too early — you lose both power and accuracy. Efficient throws keep the disc traveling on this line for as long as possible before release.
The Plane of Play
This is the flat plane formed by your shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, and the disc itself throughout the pull-through. Keeping these points aligned on one consistent plane (rather than letting your elbow drop, or your wrist break early) is what allows your hyzer angle and nose angle to stay exactly where you set them at reach-back, all the way through to release. A dropped elbow is one of the most common ways this plane breaks down, and it directly changes your release angle in ways you didn't intend.
A useful mental image: imagine the disc is attached to a rail running directly at your target, and your entire pull-through is the disc traveling down that rail, accelerating the entire way, until it flies off the end of the rail at release. Any time your hand leaves that rail — dipping, looping, dropping the elbow — you've broken the plane, and you'll feel a change in the resistance/tension of the motion at that exact moment.
4.4 Pull-Through Drills
The Slow Straight-Line Drill
From a standstill, slowly pull the disc through from full reach-back to release position without letting go, focusing entirely on keeping the disc traveling on a straight line at a consistent height (the Line of Play). Do this slowly enough that you can feel any point where the disc wants to drift off that line, and correct it in the moment.
The Elbow-High Cue Drill
Perform slow pull-throughs while consciously keeping your elbow higher than feels natural — nearly uncomfortably high. This directly reinforces the Plane of Play and is one of the most effective single cues for preventing both rounding and elbow drop simultaneously. If your elbow is high enough, you'll physically be unable to let the disc swing out and away from your body.
Resistance Band Pull-Through
Anchor a band at chest height and pull through against the resistance, focused entirely on keeping the disc on a straight line the entire way through the pull, rather than just accelerating hard at the very end. This builds the strength and motor pattern for a full-length, connected pull rather than a short, arm-only snap.
The Imaginary Target Drill
Pick a real object 10-15 feet directly in front of you on your target line (a tree, a cone, a specific blade of grass). During your pull-through, imagine you are trying to drive your elbow directly at that object before letting the forearm whip out past it. This gives your body a concrete, external cue for keeping the pull-through traveling toward the target instead of swinging around your body.
4.5 Today's Practice Session: Pull-Through
Slow Straight-Line Drill (10 minutes)
No disc, 15 reps. Focus entirely on feeling the disc travel on one straight line and height.
Elbow-High Cue Drill (10 minutes)
No disc, 15 reps. Exaggerate elbow height until it feels almost silly, then dial back 10%.
Imaginary Target Drill (10 minutes)
Putter/mid-range, 15-20 throws at 60-70% effort. Pick a real object on your line and drive your elbow at it every rep.
Resistance Band Pull-Throughs (10 minutes)
3 sets of 10. Finish with band work to reinforce the full-length pull under load.
